What’s the difference between gross and fine motor skills?
Before delving into how occupational therapy can improve these functions, let’s first define them:
Gross motor skills
Trouble with gross motor skills causes a person to struggle with walking, running, holding items, or doing anything that requires them to use large muscles in their torso, arms, and legs.
Fine motor skills
Fine motor skills are what allow a person to use the small muscles in their hands and wrists. If a person is having trouble with their fine motor skills, it will show in the way they try to write or pick small items up such as utensils or pens.
What can an occupational therapist do for my gross and fine motor skills?
As stated by the American Occupational Therapy Association, “Occupational therapy practitioners help older adults to safely do the things they want to do. They work with people in their homes, their workplaces, their communities, or in facilities.”
An occupational therapist will work with you to determine what physical limitations you are currently experiencing, and what treatments would be best for helping improve your gross and fine motor skills, in order to move past these limitations.
Treatment methods may include targeted stretches and exercises, ergonomic modifications, assistive device recommendations/training, adaptive tools for daily tasks/hobbies, manual modalities to relieve pain/improve function, and more!
